THE STORY
Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, alone onstage, sings that her lover has gone but will come back. Moments later, he appears and introduces himself as Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Their chemistry is instant and intense; they feed each other creatively and bring out each other’s wit, passion, and wildness. They burn through cash, alcohol, and a series of automobiles. Scott is ever in pursuit of literary greatness, which eludes him. Zelda is desperate for him to succeed, but wishes that one day she might become a published author, too. What follows is a horrible cycle of plagiarism, jealousy, and mutual gaslighting. Scott commits Zelda to an asylum and relocates to Hollywood, where he spends a few wretched years as an unsuccessful screenwriter. Finally, the separation becomes unbearable for them both, and he takes her on a trip to Havana, where they hope to recapture their former happiness. Scott is fatally injured; Zelda readmits herself to the asylum. Alone, she reprises her opening song: her lover is gone but will come back. Moments later, he appears and the dream begins again…
